Against the back-drop of all the news from the states about CCD, it's
alarming to note that in this area I estimate that 30% of hived bees
were lost this year - and perhaps all the 'wild' bees.
A lot of it's down to varroa (it's only recently arrived and there are
still old-school keepers who wont treat), and AFB is widespread and a
bitch. But that doesn't explain the Marie-Celeste hives..
I'm trying to set up a survey to work out exactly what has been lost
and what caused it, but I'd be interested to hear reports from other
areas too... How are your bees??
By the way, the bees who are still with us are having a great start to
the season - some have two supers filled already and queen-rearing is
well under way - much earlier than last year...
