I didn't ask the attacking bees to pose for pictures. Having been attacked,
I thought the unusual appearance of bees that were dying - whatever their
sex - could be a clue as to why the workers/guard bees were so aggressive.
As for a bee just doing its job, I think it's outside the job description to
start dive bombing me, without provocation, 20 ft from the nest, then follow
me into the house and sting me. Had I been hanging out close to the nest I
would not have considered it odd.
From the responses, I now speculate there was a mating flight not long after
some different-breed swarm was in the neighborhood, and the birth of an ugly
brood put the nest in an ugly mood. Hopefully, the queen now knows which
sperm is which and will avoid the 'bad seed'.

Judging from the effect of the most recent sting, I don't think I could
tolerate that. Maybe an age thing.

It's my understanding that moving a colony 250 ft from the house into a hive
would entail taking it miles away, getting it acclimated, then moving it
back. That'll have to wait until I feel like pulling a lot of siding off in
the middle of the night while smoking a big cigar... Anyway, things seem to
have quieted down for the time being. The blackish drones(?) outside the
nest opening are gone, and the die-off has ceased.

I once read an article about Cape Bees, which will take over a normal
beehive. Has anyone here heard of the Cape Bee? Do you think this could be
it?
